In Fourth Nature, Valerie Salez presents an installation comprised of soft and hard sculptures that form elements of a stalactite ridden Italian Renaissance grotto. The works are comprised of materials that she has collected and coveted for years.  The ancient grottos were decorated with sculptures then fitted with hydraulic systems, which allowed mineral water to trickle out thus creating stalactites which reconfigured the original artwork. In 1541, the grottos were named ‘third nature’, describing the increase in mans ability and desire to control nature in artful ways. Fourth Nature re-interprets these ‘third nature’ spaces, using predominantly synthetic materials.

Valerie Salez is a multi-disciplinary artist, who has engaged in an art practice since 2003, which includes performance, video, photography, collage and sculptural installations.
